Review: how to find the right villa in Bali

We recently booked a family holiday to Bali, and as it was the kids’ first trip, and I was 32 weeks pregnant, we wanted to make sure we had somewhere safe and clean to stay. We’re not really big resort kind of people, so opted for a villa instead. But after a Google search, I was starting to feel a bit overwhelmed by the number of villas for rent in Canggu. I finally stumbled across the Villa-Finder.com site, and that’s when things started to look a whole lot easier.

We’ve used Air BnB in the past and were really happy with it, but this time I wanted a bit more support on hand in case we needed it (ie on the off chance I went into early labour!!). Using Villa Finder just gave me a bit more peace of mind. For a start, they hand select all their properties, so you know that the photos you see on the net are what you’ll get when you arrive at the villa. They also have a Customer Service Team who contact you once you’ve made the initial enquiry to find out about everything you’re looking for, and then tailor the experience to your requirements.

But what sealed the deal for us was that there was also a Guest Relations staff member on hand in Bali who could help us out at a moment’s notice, and that gave us the ultimate reassurance. On top of finding us an awesome villa which met all the requirements we’d asked for, our rep also organised airport transfers, scooter hire, specific foods for breakfast and passes to the nearby Canggu Club.

We ended up choosing Villa Desa Roro in Canggu, and we absolutely loved it. The property is enormous, and could easily accommodate up to 10 people. There are three separate villas which can be rented out together or individually, but we were lucky enough to have the whole place to ourselves! The villa is right next to the village resort of Desa Seni, and they have a very similar feel, except that Villa Desa Roro is completely private.

The villas are traditional Indonesian style, but with the modern additions of glass (to keep out the insects!), hot water and air-conditioning. The master suite is enormous, with a huge canopy bed, lounge area with big flat screen TV, and even its own massage table. The bathroom is also huge, with a freestanding bath, and there’s a walk in wardrobe and office area too. You honestly feel like royalty staying in this suite, which at first felt a bit too ostentatious for me, but once we pulled the dividing curtains across, it became a whole lot cosier.

Who wouldn't want to live like royalty?

The villa features four other bedrooms, two large and two small, each with their own bathrooms. The two smaller bedrooms are within their own villa with a common lounge area, while the bigger ones are in the main building which also houses the kitchen, dining and communal area.

The villas are built around a stunning central salt water pool (complete with pool toys), which in turn is surrounded by immaculate tropical gardens. The kids spent hours playing in the pool while we lazed around on the sun lounges or hung out in the air conditioning in the villa. It was like having a mini resort all to ourselves!

The staff at the villa could not have been more accommodating, and the villa manager Komang is absolutely lovely. She is also a fantastic cook, and came to the villa to help prepare our breakfast each morning. She also made us a spectacular dinner one night which featured Indonesian cuisine including tempe skewers, vegetable curry and gado gado. And best of all, the whole dinner only cost us about AUD$20 for the four of us!

Being right next door to Desa Seni is also a bonus, as you have easy access to yoga classes, a full day spa and restaurant. The villa also comes with a platinum membership to the Canggu Club, which has waterslides, pools, bounce trampolines and bowling for the kids, and a day spa for mum and dad! Having the passes saved us about AUD$120.

Overall, we absolutely loved our stay at Villa Desa Roro, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. Oh, one thing I will mention though is that as it’s right near a main road, and next to a rice field full of croaking frogs, next time we stay there, we’ll bring earplugs!
